Personal: Attended Skagit Valley College and earned B.A. from WWU in Elementary Ed.with an emphasis in p.e. Taught and coached track, junior high basketball, and wrestling in Hydaburg, Alaska for 3 years. Taught and coached at Nenana, Alaska for 14 years. Coached several regional champions and state placers in wrestling. Coached the first girl in the state of Alaska to win a regional wrestling medal. Started a pee-wee wrestling program and a little dribblers basketball program. Coached girls basketball team for 5 years. Best year was 18-4 beating the 1st and 2nd place state teams in the Nenana Invitational. Coached little league in Burlington and Alger; Started a 5th grade track program in Burlington through Skagit Valley College.

Dick feels that athletics can play a significant role assisting young people in having a successful life. He is a major supporter of Whatcom County Boys and Girls Club.

Memories of BEHS: Dick feels that the quality of coaching he received at B-E was second to none. He was amazed at how much he had been taught when he talked to other athletes from other programs.

Larry Wilhonen

Personal: Involved in baseball and basketball programs at SVC. Played basketball for many years in the industrial league with other Tiger alumni. Larry and wife Polly have 3 children who were all successful in Tiger Athletics. Now there are grandkids coming through the B-E school system. They also have grandkids who have moved to the “dark side” of the river and they are having great success as Bulldogs. (He is still happy for them!)

Memories of BEHS: Glenn Rickert was the greatest coach he has ever had. Bo Campbell used to pull a dollar out of his wallet at the end of practice and have linemen who were “dogging it” in practice race for the dollar. Ted Whan inspired him to join the track team. “Silence was golden” on football game days. Bus rides to the games were also in silence.

Ray Power

Personal: Served a combat tour in Viet Nam. Was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in combat. Graduated from Univ. of Washington with a degree in construction management. This year a multi-year design build power plant project Ray was managing in Alaska won 3 prominent construction awards from the Army Corps of Engineers. Married to wife Ardell for 38 years. They have a son, Todd.

Memories of BEHS: Ray wants to express the overall respect gratitude and appreciation for the coaching efforts Glenn Rickert gave to the BEHS students and community throughout his career. Also wrestling practice with Bo Campbell brings back many colorful memories

Dennis Sparrs

Personal: B-EHS never lost a home football game during his high school career. Dad and Uncles taught him to play sports and encouraged him. Played in Industrial/City Athletic leagues after college. Still plays golf today and in 2008 played in the first flight of the Alaska Senior Amateur Tournament. Lives in Wasilla, AK.

Memories of BEHS: An honor to play for Coach Rickert and Coach Campbell. Remembers how the whole town of Burlington supported the teams. The whole town loved to hear that victory bell.

Bruce Reichert

Personal: Was Vice-President of his senior class and was one of 4 commencement speakers in 1967. After PLU joined the US Navy Reserve and served in Vietnam. Married to Eileen in 1973 and has 2 sons, Aaron and Andrew.

Dan Baxter

1964 Outstanding Lineman Award in Football; .Earned 4 Varsity Letters Football (2) Track (2).

Personal: Graduated from Seattle Pacific University with degrees in business and economics. Married for 39 years with 2 daughters and 7 grandchildren. Still bowling competitively with 2 300 games. Greatest accomplishment is the Christian lives being lived by his children and their families.

Roger Sego

Member of 1964 NWL Champion Track Team.1965 Track County Champion 880yd. 1966 NW Champions Distance Medley Relay (Sego, Dodd, R. McKee, Ramos). 1966 NWL Champion 880yd. #2 All-Time School History 880yd. 1:58.1.

Personal: Played defensive line at only 160 pounds and blocked more punts than any other defensive lineman in Tiger history to that time. Scored at least one touchdown of f of blocked punts both junior and senior year. Married 36 years and has 2 daughters. Owns an organic herb farm in La Conner, Washington.

Ron Schutte

Member of 1966 Regional Champions Basketball Team that finished 4th at State. 1967 was Everett Junior College Football Captain on Everett JC State Champion Team. 1967 Washington JC All-Star Team Member both as Offensive Tackle and Defensive Lineman.

Personal: Transferred from Meridian HS in 1964. Glen Rickert Called him at the time the, “Greatest blocking Fullback I have ever had.” Retired from Tesoro (Shell) Anacortes Refinery as Superintendent-Capitol Projects/Turnarounds after 37 years. Retired Volunteer fireman Skagit County Fire Dist. No. 5. (1970-2005) Edison Fire Chief , Dist. Fire Commissioner (200-2006). Married to Karen (Also a B-E grad.) for 40+ years. 4 children: Kimberly, Renee, Ryan and David, All BEHS graduates. Six, soon to be seven, grandchildren all in the Burlington-Edison School District.

Memories of BEHS: Appreciated the warm welcome he received from BEHS students , teachers, and coaches. Enjoyed the outstanding football and basketball coaching staffs. Basketball victories over Roosevelt and Ballard and placing 4th in state are some of the fondest memories. Also, meeting his partner-in-life, Karen, at BEHS.

Has 3 children: Aimee, Scott, and Kyler who all participated in athletics in high school and college. Also has 3 grandchildren: Baylor, Maya, and Brayden.

Memories of BEHS: Thursday night practices under the lights. At the end of practice we would gather in the center of the field and Coach Rickert would tell us what we needed to do to be successful on Friday night. Those talks were very inspiring and even now when I get in a tough situation I draw strength from those Thursday night talks that happened so many years ago. I realize now how lucky I was to play at Burlington-Edison High School. We may not have been the biggest, fastest, or the best athletes, but the coaches had a knack for getting the best out of us on each and every play, they truly believed in us.

Denny McKee

Retired Lieutenant Colonel, US Army Reserves. Employed by Washington State DSHS for 31 years. Currently working as a Program Manager in the field of aging and long-term care.

Memories of BEHS: The “Glory Days” were great. Coach Rickert taught all of the positive values for life that athletics can provide: team work, giving your best effort, taking personal responsibility for your actions, etc. Coach Campbell always provided additional motivation if your personal effort was somewhat lacking. The community provided great support and made you feel like you wanted to represent them in the best way possible. Sports at BEHS was a very positive experience.

Attended UW School of Dentistry from 1978-82. Received Doctorate in 1982. Private Practice in Mt. Vernon from 1982 to the present. Married to Claudia for 37 years. 3 Children who are all former Tigers: Stephanie, Jennifer, Christopher. 3 Grandchildren: Kiley, Clara, Colton.

Memories of BEHS: The privilege of being coached by some of the greatest men who always taught us how to dig deep for that little bit of extra strength and courage we never knew we possessed.

Roger (Joe) Peterson

Earned 9 letters in Cross Country, Wrestling, and Track. 1965 Member of District Champion Wrestling Team; Team Captain on 2nd Place in State Cross Country Team; 1966 Member of Sub-District and District Champion Wrestling Team; 1966 Wrestling Team Captain; 1966 Wrestling Sub-District Champion; 1966 Wrestling District Champion; 1967 SVC Wrestling 4th in State; 1968 SVC Wrestling State Champion; Earned Skagit Valley College Outstanding Athlete Award 1967 and 1968; 1970 WSU Wrestling 3rd Place Pac-8 Championships; 1970 WSU Most Inspirational Wrestler.Personal: Married to Janne Paulson in 1971. Two daughters, Holly and Corey and a grandson,Tyler. After college and the Army Reserves, worked at a local feed manufacturing company for 20+ years. Also worked in construction and was a commercial fisherman for 20 years.

Memories of BEHS: Has fond memories of his BEHS classmates. “I feel very fortunate to have been born and raised here. Every one of my coaches was a great inspiration mentally and athletically, especially Bo Campbell and Ted Whan at B-E and Gary Knutzen at SVC. I feel very fortunate.”

Qualified for 13 State Tournaments- 1998 Played in 2B State Title Game; 2001 Played in 2B State Semi-Finals, 1998 District 1 Coach of the Year; 1999 Head Coach Earl Barden East/West Football All-Star Game. 2009 Seattle Seahawks Football Coach of the Week; 2007 Orcas Island High School Football Field Renamed “Dennis W. Personal: Married to Bonnie for 33 years; 2 Children, Ingen, an Orcas and UW grad, and Olen an Orcas and Seattle U grad. Wife Bonnie has been a teacher for 33 years.

Randy Rabenstein

Competed in Wrestling and Track at WSU.

Personal: Worked for YMCA for 32 years. Retired from Skagit Valley Family YMCA in 2004 as Executive Director. Has two children and two grandkids.

Personal: Married to Marsha for 30 years; Has 2 sons, Cody and Casey who placed in State Wrestling for MVHS; Owned and Operated Big Rock Grocery for 24 years; State level wrestling official for 40 years; Selected to officiate 28 State Wrestling Tournaments, Served as Head Official 14 Times; Coached 7th and 8th Grade Wrestling for LaVenture Middle School for 15 years; Also a Little League Baseball Coach.

Memories of BEHS: Coaches Bo Campbell and Glenn Rickert for their inspiration. The time spent in the old gym wrestling room where the temperature was always 100 degrees plus.

Don Power

Personal: Don and Wife Michelle Live in Burlington. They have 2 children and 3 grandchildren. Don graduated from The University of Washington with a business degree in 1972. He worked at a local, family business, Skagit-Northwest Distributing before retirement. Don is active in the Burlington Community with volunteer activities that include the Burlington Rotary Club, B-E Education and Alumni Foundation, Meals on Wheels, B-E Baseball Concession Stand, and Allen United Methodist Church. Memories of BEHS: Don appreciates the coaches and teachers he had at BEHS and their caring support during those days.

Jack Norman

Lettered in Football, Basketball, Track. 1st Team All-NW Football 1965. Honorable Mention All-NW Football 1964. Basketball Captain on 1966 NWL Champions; Team was Region I Champion and finished 4th in State. Freshman and JV football at United States Air Force Academy.

Personal: Commissioned as an officer in the USAF. 8 years of active duty as a fighter pilot, and over 20 years total as a pilot and admissions liaison officer with USAF Academy . Masters Degree from Univ. of Illinois. 30 years as an airline pilot with Continental Airlines. Currently flies Boeing 757 and 767 on International trips. Married with 2 children; currently lives in Bethlehem, PA.

Memories of BEHS: A great sense of family with my classmates and teammates. Dedicated coaches and teachers who were wonderful mentors. Remembers the loyal following from the wider Burlington community.

John Lopez

Class of 1969; Inducted 2011

County, League, District Champion Cross Country 1968. 4th in State XC 1968. Member of State Champion Cross Country team 1968. League Champion 2 Mile Run 1969. School Record Holder 2 Mile Run (9:39.2) 1969. Competed in Track and Cross Country 2 years at Spokane Falls Community College. 2nd in WAACC Cross Country Championships 1969 and ’70 leading team to State Titles both years. Placed in WAACC Track Championships in 1970 and ’71 leading team to State Titles both years. Inducted in to the SFCC Hall of Fame. Lettered in both XC and Track at Boise State University.

Personal: Married with 2 sons in Nampa, ID. Teaches PE and is Head Cross Country Coach for Nampa HS. Also assistant track coach and assistant girls basketball coach. Has taught and coached at Nampa for 35 years. Has coached boys and girls individual state champions and track as well as leading teams to state and district titles. Won the 2002 National AFLAX Award as girls basketball assistant coach of the year and last summer won assistant coach of the year for the State of Idaho Coaches Association.

Memories of BEHS: “B-EHS was a great school and Ted Whan was a great coach. He inspired me to continue my education and to become a teacher and coach. While attending B-EHS, I loved to run and loved to compete. I remember training independently and with teammates. I also enjoyed attending athletic events with friends for other B-EHS sporting events. I was a member of Tiger Club and the President of Spanish Club.

Gary Dahlstedt

1st Team All-NW Football 1968; School Record 100 (10.9) 1969 and School Record 220 (22.5) 1968. #3 All-Time 440 (50.4) 1969. County Champion 220 1968. NWL and District Champion 220 1968. Member of County, League, District Champion 880 Relay. Relay Team Finished 5th in State 1968. County Champion 100, 220, 440 1969. Set County Records in all 3 events. League Champion 100 and 220; District Champion 100 1969. State Qualifier 1968 and ’69. Varsity Track WSU.

Personal: Ankle injury sophomore year at WSU ended athletic career. Graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. Moved back to Skagit Valley and coached Little League Baseball and Girls U-141/2 soccer in Burlington. He and his wife Kate each have 4 kids. Gary’s 4 kids (Tracy, Trisha, Jaime, and Drew) all graduated from B-EHS. He and his wife are involved with their 5 (and counting) grandkids. He is currently a construction supervisor at the Tesoro Refinery.

Mike Hopley

College Javelin and School Record Holder in Javelin; Letter Winner Basketball Eastern Washington University; 5th in National Track Meet Javelin; School Record Holder Javelin; All-American Javelin.

Personal: 10 Years teaching in the Omak School District and 10 years as a track and field coach. Currently a professional fishing guide for his own company, Alaskan Adventure Charters on the Kenai Peninsula. Married to Jerilue with 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren.

All-State Basketball Team and member of Regional Champions and 2nd in State Basketball Team 1969. 1st Team All-NW Baseball, All-State Feeder Game, Baseball Captain 1969. Played Basketball and Baseball at SVC. Skagit Valley College Male Athlete of the Year 1971.

Member of Washington Loggers Roller Hockey Team that won 1969 National Championship. Voted MVP of National Roller Hockey Tournament 1970.

Personal: Currently employed in the beverage industry for 28 years at Skagit Northwest/ Crown Distributing. Engaged to Peggy Betschart Massey. 4 Children; 4 granddaughters.

Dan Costanti

Lettered in cross country and track. Member of 1967 State Champion Cross Country Team. Member of 1968 Skagit County, NWL, and District Champion Track Team. Member of 1968 880 Relay Team that won Skagit County, NWL, and District Titles while placing 5th in state. 880 Relay team set NWL Record in 1:31.1 and also set school record 1:30.7. 1970 Member of Skagit Valley College Mile Relay Team that set school record and won Junior College State Title. Placed 4th in State JC 440 in 1970. Voted Skagit Valley College Track Most Inspirational.


Personal: Graduated from CWU in 1973. Taught at Allen Elementary School for 29 years. Coached 7-8th grade track, basketball, baseball, and soccer for 34 years. Alger Volunteer Firefighter for 39 years and counting. Commercial fisherman for 45 years and partnership owner in Challenger Ridge Vineyards and Cellars. Married to Cathy with sons Ryan, Scott, Lee, and daughter Jennifer, all B-E HS graduates. Memories of B-E: Ted Whan’s infamous pre-meet speeches and the chuck hole, gravel filled parking lot at the high school.

Paul Taylor

Member of 1968 Undefeated NWL Champion 5th in State Football Team. 1968 1st Team All-NW Basketball on Co-NWL Champions. 286 Rebounds at the time the 8th most in one season in school history. Member of 1968 NWL Champion Track Team. Honorable Mention All-NW Safety on NWL Co-Champion Football Team that finished 4th in State. 1969 1st Team All-NW Basketball on team that won Regional Championship and finished 2nd in State. 322 Rebounds in a season tied for school record at the time. Also 75% Ft #9 All-time. 1969 Member of School and County Record setting Mile Relay (3:28.9). Personal: Graduated 1st in Class at B-EHS and was Senior Class President. Graduated from U.S. Air Force Academy 1973. Graduated from Arizona State University Law School in 1980. Active Duty Air Force 1973-86. Reservist 1986-2001. President of Law Office of Paul W. Taylor Inc., P.S. 1993-Present. President and Managing Broker of NW CREST Inc. 2010-Present. Daughter Jennifer graduated from B-EHS in 2009 and Kathy is a current junior in the class of 2014. Memories of B-E: “I was extremely fortunate to be coached by a cadre of exceptional coaches (Glenn Rickert, Don Leach, Jerry Garcea, Bo Campbell, Don Erickson, and Ted Whan) who, each in their own way, instilled in me a love and respect for each sport and team play. I cannot begin to express the great memories I have of each and how each prepared me for later challenges in life. Additionally I was incredibly privileged to play with a group of outstanding athletes, all of which were gifted athletes as well as outstanding citizens. I was lucky and healthy enough to play competitive sports for nearly forty years after high school but those athletes I participated with in high school were some of the very best. I have nothing but fond memories of them and BEHS.

Gary Randall

Earned 6 varsity letters in football, basketball, and baseball. 1967 football starter on undefeated NWL Champions. 1967 member of district champion and state qualifying basketball team. 1968 1st Team All-NW Basketball. Leading Scorer, Team Captain. Upon graduation 3rd All-time BEHS points in a season 402. 1966-68 3 Year Starter as Outfielder in baseball. 1968 2nd Team All-NW.

1969-70 Basketball at SVC. 1970 All-State Junior College and Team MVP. 1969-70 Track at SVC. School record in Javelin and 6th in State Junior College Championships. 1971-72 Basketball CWU. NAIA League Champions 1971 and National Tournament Qualifier.

Personal: Graduated from CWU with BA in Ed. Worked for Dynes Farms, Hansen and Peterson and 18years as Sales and General Manager at Sound Beverage. Current owner and operator of Gentleman Gene’s Pub and Eatery in Mt. Vernon for last 7 years.

Memories of B-EHS: The best memories I have of B-EHS are of the closeness and camaraderie we had as athletes and how the entire student body and community got behind all of our sports and activities. We had great coaches and a rich tradition of always striving to be the best we could possibly be. It was neat to be even a small part of that great tradition.

Tony Lomsdalen

Lettered in Football and Wrestling. 1967 1st Team All-NW Defensive End on Glenn Rickert’s 1st undefeated NWL Champion Football Team. Most Inspirational Player 1967. Led NWL in Sacks 1967 Season. 1966 Member of District and Regional champion Wrestling Team.

Wrestled for Skagit Valley College and played football at Everett Community College. Played 6 years of Semi-Pro Football for Skagit Valley Raiders.

Personal: Lives in Burlington. Wife Michele (B-EHS 1973) Married for almost 42 years. Son Luke (B-EHS 2001), Worked for Skagit Distributing for 29 years, retired in 2003 and started BayView Land Maintenance with son Luke.

Memories of B-EHS: Playing for Coach Rickert and having a 10-0 record senior year and wrestling for Bo Campbell.

Jess del Bosque

Lettered in track and cross country.  Team captain XC 1964.  State qualifier XC 1963 and 1964.  Ran at WWU 2 years. 

Track and Field Coach 40 years at MVHS, 10 as head, 30 as distance coach.  Coached 7 State Champions.  Head XC Coach at MVHS for 32 years.  Won 17 Skagit County Championships and 8 NWL Championships. 19 times teams or individuals qualified for state. 2022 Running Trail at SVC, which has held numerous cross country meets over the years, named Coach del Bosque Running Trail, by Skagit County Commissioners. 

Personal: Taught Spanish for 30 years.  Appointed by Governor Locke as SVC Trustee for 5 years. Reappointed for 5 more years by Governor Gregoire.  Retired from coaching in 2010.  Qualified for and ran NYC Marathon at 68 in 2014. Qualified for and ran Boston Marathon in 2017 at 71. Rehired in 2022 as Head Cross Country and assistant track coach at MVHS. Lives in Mt. Vernon, Married for 52 years, wife passed away in 2022 from ALS. Supported him in his coaching for all of his years. Has 2 great children, Lisa and Kevin.  

 Memories of B-EHS:  Running and my coach Ted Whan that led me to continue my education which led me to coaching.
