ACT vs SAT

Both ACT and SAT scores are used for college admissions and merit-based scholarships. Colleges don't prefer one over the other, so explore both tests to decide which one is right for you.

•4 Mandatory Sections

•English – 75 questions, 45 minutes

•Math – 60 questions, 60 minutes

•Reading – 40 questions, 35 minutes

•Science – 40 questions, 35 minutes

•Optional Writing Section (40 minutes)

•Total time without Writing: 2 hours and 55 minutes with one 10-minute break between the Math and Reading sections.

HOW MUCH IS THE ACT?

The ACT with no writing is $42.50 (2016-17) and the ACT with writing $58.50 (2016-17) which includes score reports for you, your high school and up to four college choices for which a valid code is listed at time of registration. You may send additional score reports for $12.00 each. There are additional fees for late registration, standby testing, test date or center change and items.

ACT Fee Waivers are available to low-income 11th and 12th grade students. To find out more information and if you are eligible for a fee waiver see your school counselor.

HOW MUCH IS THE SAT?

SAT® is $46.00 (2017-18) and the SAT with Essay is $60.00 (2017-18). There are additional fees if you register by phone, change the date or location of the test, register late or are on a wait-list and are admitted to the test center on test date.

SAT® Subject Tests are $26.00 (2017-18) which covers the test date, on which you can take one, two, or three Subject Tests. Additional tests are $21.00, except Language Test with Listening (only available in November) which is $26.00 additional per test.

For a quick supplement to your SAT prep—say, between classes or while waiting in the grocery store line—the Daily Practice app is a great choice. Since it’s from the makers of the SAT, it features official questions. You can practice with the question of the day or access an archive of previous questions organized by difficulty level. The app will also track stats so you can see your improvement over time. A note of caution: Some users have complained that the functionality of this current version of the app for the redesigned SAT is not up to par with the one for the old SAT.
