My name is Brian Heim. I was born and raised in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Goldsboro is a great town, but I'm glad to live by the beach in Brunswick County now. My hobbies include listening to podcasts, playing music, and reading books. I attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received a BA in English Literature. I received my teaching certification through the NCTeach Program at East Carolina University. I have taught a wide variety of ages and subjects, ranging from 6th grade Social Studies to English as a Second Language for adults. I am glad to be utilizing my degree in order to help students access their own personal love of reading. I believe each student has a path towards becoming an eager reader. It is my job as your teacher to help you realize that the world of literature goes far beyond what people traditionally think of in an ELA class. We will be studying websites, articles, poems, short stories, and many more forms of literature togethe. When I was 14 I realized that the music I enjoyed could count as a form of literature when focusing on lyrics. This helped my perspective on English class change for the better. I hope to elevate each students love of reading through standards aligned, technologically appropriate instruction.
Michael Jordan is one of my favorite people in the world. Don't expect to go too many days without hearing a Jordan quote or reference in our ELA class.
Going to concerts is one of the things I am looking forward to most one day when all this calms down.
