5th grade students will learn to play the ukulele as a part of the 5th grade North Carolina Music Standard Course of Study. Teaching ukulele will be done in a sequential, performance-based way through which students will explore elements of music including melody, harmony, rhythm, form, tempo, dynamics, and tone. Areas of skill will include singing, picking, strumming, ear training, sight-reading, improvising, music theory, harmonizing, and more. This will all be done through a program I created called "Ukulele Star" which is similar to earning belts in Recorder Karate in 4th grade. You will see the students’ progress on their developing instrumental skills throughout the year as they earn a sticker for each new chord or skill they learn. Students will place their 'Star Stickers' on the their ukulele to proudly display their achievement. There will be an opportunity to purchase your student their own ukulele if you choose but it is not required, as students can use my classroom instruments each week. Students who do not have their own ukulele will be given a card for their 'Star Stickers' so they can collect them all in one place and we will keep the cards in the music room so they don't get lost.
