Each Brunswick County Schools elementary school site offers nurturing and talent development for students who demonstrate advanced learning potential in kindergarten through 3rd grade. All K-3 students receive nurturing-based lessons via the PETS (Primary Education Thinking Skills) curriculum integrated into classroom instruction. By utilizing multiple data sources, students who exhibit above grade level proficiency and/or skills or who demonstrate potential for advanced learning receive additional talent development opportunities and participate in enrichment and extension activities focused on a variety of student interest areas.
Brunswick County Schools students who meet the criteria for gifted programs and services in 4th and 5th grades participate in AIG classes for reading/English language arts and/or math. The AIG instruction at the elementary school level is delivered through one or a combination of delivery options (resource, pull-out, cluster-grouping), led by an AIG licensed/certified teacher who has been trained to understand and meet the academic and affective needs of gifted learners. Students in these classes are to receive advanced instruction, utilizing above-grade level and compacted curriculum and instructional units designed specifically for gifted and advanced learners.
Each Brunswick County Schools elementary school site has a designated AIG lead teacher who is responsble for ensuring that gifted and advanced learners are provided the opportunities and services needed to develop academic and/or intellectual potential. AIG leads are the point of contact at the school site and act as liaison between the school and district level.
