Function: Sends electrical signals (messages) to all other body systems
Parts/Organs:
- Brain= control center
- Spinal cord=like a highway that messages travel on to/from your brain to the rest of your body
- Nerves=receive or send messages back to your brain
Interacts (works with): 1. All other body systems to control them by sending messages. The brain sends voluntary messages (like moving your arm) and involuntary messages (like telling your heart to beat or your food to digest)
Function: Breaks down foods into useable sources of energy
Parts/Organs:
- Mouth – Start of the digestion process
- Esophagus – Tube running from your mouth to your stomach
- Stomach – Organ that uses acids to break down food into nutrients
- Small Intestine – Removes nutrients from food and sends to bloodstream
- Large Intestine – Fat and other harmful substances removed
Interacts (works with):
1. Circulatory System to transport or move nutrients through your blood to all other parts of your body
Circulatory/Cardiovascular System:
Function: Transports (moves) nutrients and oxygen to cells throughout your body. Also, transports carbon dioxide to your lungs to breathe out.
Parts/Organs:
- Heart – Strong muscle that involuntarily pumps blood and connects to the lungs to get oxygen
- Blood – carries oxygen and nutrients to body’s cells
- Veins – carry blood TO your heart
- Arteries – carry blood AWAY from your heart
Interacts (works with):
- Respiratory system – gets oxygen and then transports to body’s cells
- Nervous System – tells the heart muscles to pump
- Skeletal System – produces red blood cells used by the circulatory system to transport to body’s cells
Function: To BREATHE! Supplies oxygen to cells and gets rid of waste (carbon dioxide)
Parts/Organs:
- Mouth
- Nose
- Trachea – Tube from mouth and nose to the lungs
- Lungs
Interacts (works with):
- Circulatory System – move oxygen through bloodstream to cells and takes carbon dioxide back to the lungs to breathe out
Function: Protects organs in the other body systems, gives your body structure/shape/support to stand, produces red blood cells.
Parts/Organs:
- 206 bones in an adult body
- Skull – protects the brain
- Teeth – used to break food into smaller pieces
- Rib Cage – protects heart and lungs
- Cartilage – connective tissue that prevents friction between bones
Interacts (works with):
- Muscular system to help the body move since muscles is attached to bone
- Protects organs in your body from each body system
Function: Facilitates or helps with body movement
Parts/Organs:
- Muscles – contract and relax to move bones
- Heart – the strongest muscle in your body
- Tendons – attach muscle to bone
- Voluntary muscles – you control them!
- Involuntary muscles – you do NOT control them .They are automatic
Interacts (works with):
- Skeletal system – muscles contract and relax to help with movement
- Circulatory system – heart (muscle) pumps blood, nutrients, and oxygen to body
