Exploring By the Seat of Your Pants and Explorer Classroom

Real-life learning experiences excite curiosity. Two organizations, Explore By the Seat of Your Pants and National Geographic Explorer Classroom offers just that!

πŸ”Explorers, scientists, conservationists, and biologists "beam" into your classroom (using Zoom) and now your home. A few lucky students will be able to ask questions directly to the speaker using Zoom and others can ask explorers questions via live chat. Both programs stream live on Youtube.

This year I worked with Ms. Dona's Dual Language 4th grade class at Avery's Creek Elementary in Asheville, NC . Her students, in partnership with National Geographic Explorer Classroom, interviewed Daniel Arauz, a conservationist who carries out a project to protect sea turtles in Costa Rica. Other schools around the world connected using Youtube Live and watched our live interview. Her students were able to practice interviewing Mr. Arauz using their Spanish language skills. You can also check out our local news station, WLOS's, coverage of Melissa Justen's class as they connected with Rwandan veterinarian Dr. Olivier Nsengiman and learned about his work to save the Grey Crowned Cranes.
