It's easy to incorporate global education into your classroom. Can't find the time to insert it into your lesson? How about a 5 minute brain break?
F2F: This is that infamous Find Someone Who game but with a global twist. Students can play this in the classroom with a printed sheet. Classmates will sign the square that applies to them.
Virtual: This can also be played on a virtual platform like Zoom of Google Meet. Force a copy of the link and share this with students. Students will open the document in another tab while you share your screen so they can see the bingo card. Students will move the chips to the squares that apply to them. You can then read each square and ask students to give a thumbs up if they placed a chip in that square. This is a great way to get to know one another and celebrate similarities and differences. This activity builds empathy in your class.
Create a Google Form and ask students and staff to submit a picture that shows them standing by a famous landmark. As a bellringer, pull up the image and ask students to use their critical thinking and geography skills to determine the location. Students must include the clues they used to help them guess where the person was visiting. Struggling writers and ELs may need sentence starters to assist them with writing. This can be facilitated F2F or virtually using a platform like Zoom with screen sharing.
Pair students up. Give them 5 minutes to collaborate and name as many famous landmarks and locations as they can. This can be facilitated F2F or virtually using a platform like Zoom with screen sharing.
During your brain break or during transition, consider exposing students to world music. This Youtube channel features music from around the world.
During your brain break or transition, consider choosing a live stream to create a sense of relaxation. Use live streams such as aquariums that feature shark cams, jellyfish cams, and tropical fish cams. Studies have shown that watching aquariums lowers blood pressure, calms the mind, and reduces anxiety.
