Hello!🪻
So glad you are here! I am excited and honored to be teaching 5th grade at North Windy Ridge. Here are some tidbits about me:
I have three daughters who are all Blackhawks - currently two are running Cross Country for the middle and highschool and one will be learning to play volleyball.
I work at a Summer Camp in Vermont every summer and am known as 'The Nature Lady' 🍄🟫
I went to Maryville College for my undergrad degree (Environmental Studies) and Western Carolina for my Masters (Teaching)
I have taught Middle School Science and Social Studies and have also worked here at NWR as a Reading teacher.
I have two cats - Buttons and Taffy 🐈🐈⬛
A lifelong Goal is to visit all of our National Parks ⛰️
I LOVE everything BOOKS - I love libraries, bookshops, talking books, books and coffee, collecting books (my husband is great at building book shelves 😂), and I can't wait to share my love of reading with our class community!
Hi, all! 👋
Welcome - we are lucky to have you, and I'm grateful to be part of your life story. Here are some fun facts about me!
This will be my 12th year as a teacher! I love my job and I take my responsibility to encourage and grow your child's pink squishy brain very seriously. 🧠
I have a cat named Grimm 🐈⬛
I love gardening (so...it's very lucky/unlucky that Reems Creek Nursery is moving next door to NWR!) 🌻
Proudest Moment (so far): Graduating from Harvard 📜
I love to read 📚
My favorite subject is History - I'm borderline obsessed with WW2 and have attended many WW2 conferences. 🪖
Rapid-fire answers: my favorite color is green, I only order Starbucks in the fall (my pumpkin spice girls will know why!), I don't have a sports team I follow - but I oddly love watching sport documentaries, my favorite hobby is thrifting (mostly everything I found to decorate our classroom was thrifted!), and my favorite flowers are sunflowers (closely followed by hydrangeas).
This week, October 19th- October 23rd in our classes...
5th Math:
Unit 2: Fractions as Quotients
IXL Fraction Skill Tree due November
Khan Academy Dividing Fractions Unit 7: Due November
**Homework change** students will be taking their devices home. Homework will be 25 minutes of IXL from Monday-Thursday. IXL records the amount of active minutes per day - so their grade will be the number of minutes spent on IXL. This will be put into the gradebook on Fridays.
Family resources:
Standard: Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions.
🌟
5th Science:
5.P.2
Understand the interactions of matter and energy and the changes that occur.
5th ELA:
RL 5.2 Determine a Theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; Summarize the text.
Wit & Wisdom Module 1 Essential Question:
How do cultural beliefs and values guide people?
*HW this week: Reading Log in your student's Red Folder. They will need to read at home for at least 100 minutes each week (they can pick the days!) and answer three questions about their text. Reading logs will be given on Mondays and checked the following Monday. This will be for a grade. Thank you for supporting our readers at home.
5th Social Studies:
Unit Study: History Alive Chapter - Native American Cultural Regions
Focus Standard: 5.H.1 Understand the role of various people, events, and ideas in shaping the United States.
*head over to the S.S. page on this site to see a more detailed plan :)
