What I like most about the GATE program is that most of the time we're doing a learn-by-doing project. It's not worksheet, worksheet, worksheet. I also like Science Lab and Computer Lab every Wednesday year round. Also, all the extracurricular activities that we can do such as Robotics, Lego Club, and Computer Club.

The GATE program has given my son so many opportunities, but what was most valuable to me as a parent was the fact that going to school no longer became a struggle and a hassle. My son was so bored at our neighborhood school and it was a battle to get him ready to go every morning. That's not an issue anymore. He's learning, yes! But he's also thriving and having fun. And I can't ask for more than that.

One of my favorite things about the GATE program is the teachers. Throughout my 7 years of school, I had the best experiences 2nd thru 6th grades at Bessie Owens Primary and Intermediate Schools. Our teachers focused on teaching, helping, and preparing us for all tasks, present and for what was to come. They also allowed us to be mindful and open with each other if we had problems. They give us the tools that we need or will need in the future. Another thing I love about GATE is the extra curricular activities that we get to do. For example, we have an annual science fair, where we test a question of our choice. The past two years, I have won first place and would go on to the county Science Fair. My experiment this year was about safety and testing mechanical rope rescue systems.
In conclusion, GATE has been one, if not, the greatest experience of my life.
-Anabel Alvidrez, 6th grade, Room 16
My daughter, a 6th grader at Owens Intermediate, started the GATE program in 2nd grade; the only dedicated full day GATE program in Bakersfield. A program that teaches the students to learn at a quicker pace not taught in a traditional class setting. To be surrounded with classmates that have the same desire to think and work hard, by pushing and challenging themselves, with the understanding that they are not alone and it's ok to be an advanced learner. The teachers gave them tools to engage and collaborate with each other on all projects and assignments, inclusive to the Science and Computer Labs giving them a "hands on" learning opportunity outside of the classroom setting, with the same expectations. Additionally, the chance to participate in the Music and Performing Arts programs kept the kids motivated.
I can honestly say that in the beginning I initially had questions about her safety due to the location and area of where Owens is at. Once she was at the school, it just felt right, and I believed and knew in my heart she was safe and that we made the right decision for Anabel and her education. I am grateful and thankful for the GATE program, the amazing Teachers, the Administration and Staff at both Owens Primary and Intermediate, and BCSD.
