Weeds are nothing more than plants growing where you don't want them. Many weeds are useful and wonderful, but if left to their own devices can quickly take over a growing space, and outcompete the plants you are growing.
The trick with weed control is to weed early and often, removing the weeds before they go to seed. With gloves and the right tools, this is a fun task for students to help maintain the garden.
