Baltimore City Public Schools' Farm to School team connects staff with training opportunities centered on teaching from a schoolyard growing space. We also offer periodic professional development sessions and one-on-one consulting. Contact us at farms@bcps.k12.md.us to learn more.
In School Year 2024-25, you may be able to earn a stipend for your work on school gardens and greening activities. (The Achievement Unit system has been eliminated).
Up to 3 teachers per school can apply for the Green Leader program for work they perform during uncompensated time.
Program requirements:
Submit an application signed by your school leadership.
Submit documentation via powerpoint several times during the year (photos, student work, emails, newsletters, etc.)
Keep a time log.
Complete an End-of-Year survey
As of August 2024, City Schools and the Baltimore Teachers Union (BTU) are in contract negotiations. Applying and documenting your hours and work will preserve your ability to receive compensation, depending on the outcome of negotiations.

Irvine Nature Center offers a variety of workshops and classes to train teachers in stewardship of water resources, wildlife-based conservation, tree and forestry, wetlands, planning outdoor classrooms, nature based learning, etc. Additionally, a specialist can come to your garden and lead a garden-based lesson.
The Whole Kids Foundation has a Healthy Teachers Program to assist teachers in improving their personal health and wellness to become the healthiest possible role models for students.
Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation hosts periodic training programs for teachers across the state.
University of Maryland Extension and Baltimore City Master Gardeners also offer long-term courses and one-time workshops on relevant topics.
DC Greens offers FREE workshops open to all teachers on DC Professional Development days and over the summer. Rooting DC is an annual FREE urban garden/farm and food justice conference every March.
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation offers summer professional dev for teachers, including programs on Oysters, Baltimore City industry and water, and a program focused on food systems and farming from the Eastern Shore to Baltimore City.
