Grit and Growth Mindset

Grit is passion and perseverance to accomplish a goal. Growth Mindset is to believe that intelligence and talents are not innate, but that performance can be improved and we can all grow as people. Children (and adults) who have a fixed mindset may lay blame on others when they hit barriers and give up easily, or not even try because they are afraid they won't have the innate ability to do something. It is critical children understand that the brain is a muscle which grows and improves with lessons learned from mistakes.

Many of the picture books that feature story lines about grit and growth mindset are available through the digital libraries available to FSK students, or by finding youtube read alouds, and are a good start for a discussion with your children. When they are feeling challenged by their distance learning assignments, a growth mindset will be necessary! There are some computer programs and other resources for older students here as well.
