Make a Simple Machines & Rube Goldberg googleslides presentation
Share it with Ms Milea by Friday at 3pm. I will be choosing the best ones and have asked the team Nikau teachers to help me choose!
I am still waiting on a number of you to complete this task?
Massive thanks to Antonia, Alex, Holli, Emily, Sienna, Noah!!!!! Also Klaas, Harnain, Luke, Misha, David & Gisele who also nailed this assignment
Let’s have a look at Gisele’s work; Rube Goldberg and the 6 simple machines
Your work should include the following slides;
The 6 Simple Machines Simple Machines: Facts from this article explaining how each one works; screw, pulley, wedge, inclined plane, wheel & axle, lever AND what is the science behind this simple machine eg; force, gravity, motion, friction etc
Rube Goldberg information page - Who is he? Where is he from? Age etc? What were his interests? What has he done? What are his most impressive achievements? What have people done to copy his ideas?
Include 1 or 2 of your favourite youtube clips where people have designed machines inspired by Rube Goldberg. These people have copied his ideas on youtube called Rube Goldberg machines
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Av07QiqmsoA Find one that you could be inspired by https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgDF1tyoOvU
Add a hand drawn picture of your own design to the googleslides pres and then add some photos of you setting up your own Rube Goldberg machine/marble run.
Finally add a clip of you - where you have filmed your own ball in motion. There should be at least 6 parts that your marble goes through and the person with the longest marble run will get a prize!
You will need a ball or marble to make your own Rube Goldberg machine. I think it should take you a couple of hours to make your own design and to set up your own design and to film it.

Please can you remind your year 7 problem solving students, both those that normally attend classes with me on Fridays during maths and those that normally attend classes with Regan on Monday period five to check their emails and send a confirmation reply that they have received the email. By last night only a handful or so of year 7 students had replied, so I sent another email to their parents about Thursday’s competition also asking for students to reply.
I do not want students to miss the opportunity to take part in Otago just because we are at home during alert level 3.
Should any of these students be online with you at ten o’clock tomorrow I would be grateful if you could remind them they should be on their special Google Meet to complete Otago Problem Solving Challenge 4.

I would like you to work on your 2020 Speech.
The topic this year is Wisdom
Yesterday you were asked to send me your brainstorm and Wisdom topic. Thank you to Caitlyn, Jayda, Sienna, Jaco, Valeria, Jemma, James, Misha, David W, Luke, Sani who did this. Where were the rest of you?
By the end of today, I would like you to share with me your speech so far. Show me what you have done so far. By 3pm today it needs to be more than just a brainstorm. I will be checking off your names at 3pm.
And it should be clear whether it’s a traditional, rap, spoken word or flash talk

Inquiry:
Inquiry - How the World Works
Central Idea - Innovation is influenced by the needs of society
Lines of Inquiry
how the need for innovation creates opportunity and challenges
how nature inspires innovation
the effects of forces and motion
Read this article on the 6 Simple Machines Simple Machines: Facts
And for each simple machine record in your Inquiry books or on paper or online
How does it work? Explain
What is the science behind this simple machine eg; force, gravity, motion, friction etc
Share your work with me; take a pic or send it to me
Then Make a fact file sheet on Rube Goldberg in your Inquiry books/googleslides
Who is he? Where is he from? Age etc?
What is he interested in?
What has he done?
What are his most impressive achievements? What have people done to copy his ideas?
Create a googleslides presentation about him and include 1 or 2 of your favourite youtube clips - you have a couple of days to complete this googleslides presentation.
Include the people who have copied his ideas on youtube called Rube Goldberg machines
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Av07QiqmsoA
Find one that you could be inspired by https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgDF1tyoOvU and I want you to create your own Rube Goldberg inspired machine and film it. You will need a ball or marble to make your own Rube Goldberg machine. I think it should take you a couple of hours to make your own design and to set up your own design and to film it.
Add a hand drawn picture of your own design to the googleslides pres and then add some photos of you setting up your own Rube Goldberg machine/marble run and finally add a clip where you have filmed your own ball in motion. There should be at least 6 parts that your marble goes through and the person with the longest marble run will get a prize!
This needs to be completed by Weds or Thursday this week by EVERYONE in our class. We could watch the best ones on Friday in our meet
Forces and Motion: Please finish answering ALL of these questions in your inquiry book/google docs and send me evidence you have completed it. I will be checking to see that it is finished by Thursday
Tomorrow I will share Knowledge-a-thon with you so get ahead with all of your work.
Less gaming. More work!
Your homework is to do some exercise at least 3 x this week and send me a pic by Friday
I would also like you to do some from the SPECIALIST programme.

Sharing the Planet Report Writing and Art Task 2020
Endangered Animal Writing
For this task you will be choosing a species that is native/endemic to New Zealand. The species that you choose must have been under a threat in the past and through human intervention have turned this around. The species could still be under threat, however the threat level will be considerably less than the past OR the species could have recovered and be thriving due to the intervention that has taken place.
Write an Information Report under the following headings. Each heading should be written on a new paragraph. The headings are; general classification & life span, appearance, habitat, diet, reason for endangerment, conclusion.
Remember that an Information Report is a factual text, that explores a topic that you have researched. There are lots of examples all over the internet but here is an example of a basic onehttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1RPzGGaKnLcROB-vf4oyik5SwILJK_QEjhvrUnocOVeU/edit
The report should be between 600-700 words long and should include the websites etc that you used as References. It is due on Wednesday the 8th of April
Endangered Animal Art
Please choose one endangered animal to create an artwork for. It would be good to choose the same native/endemic NZ species that you wrote about in your essay. You have the choice of how to portray your animal. Be creative, there are many artworks available to look at which include many genres of art. If you have crayons, pastels, colouring pencils that would be a great start. This is not to be an online activity as you have plenty of those to do. Challenge yourself with this activity. Some of you have large paper to use and hopefully the rest of you can source some A4 paper. Please see examples below.
Your artwork is due on Wednesday the 8th of April
