  1. Ensure that your child is reading every day for at least 20 minutes.

  2. Don't underestimate the power of reading to and with your child every day.

  3. Provide a variety of books and reading material for your child to read each day. This can include picture books, chapter books, graphic novels, magazines, electronic books, etc.

  4. Find out what your child is interested in reading and try to provide reading material on their topics of interest.

  5. Encourage your child to make predictions about the story based on the title and pictures prior to reading.

  6. Ask your child questions about what they've read. Who are the characters? Where does the story take place? What happened in the beginning, middle, and end? What was the problem in the story? What was the solution in the story? How would you change the ending to the story?

  7. Encourage your child to visualize what's happening in the story.

  8. Encourage your child to talk about their favorite part of the story. Also, have your child write about their favorite part and draw a picture to match.

  9. Encourage your child to compare and contrast one book that they are reading to another book that they've read. How are they similar? How are they different?

  10. Read a book with your child that has been made into a movie. After reading the book, watch the movie. Then, compare and contrast the book to the movie.

  11. Encourage your child to make connections to the story. Does the story remind them of anything they've ever experienced? Does the story connect with anything that is happening on the news, in their community, or around the world?

  12. Encourage your child to think about things they already know before they begin reading the story. Encourage your child to think of things they want to learn from the story. Encourage your child to stop and write down questions they have as they read. Encourage your child to summarize the story after they've finished reading.
