Sensory processing is the way we receive and interpret sensory input. The sensory systems include; proprioceptive (input into muscles, joints, and tendons), vestibular (movement), tactile, auditory, taste, smell, and interception. Students may have sensitivities or defensiveness to sensory input. This may cause sensory overload. Students may also seek out sensory input. This may cause challenges to regulate for learning. Some ways OT supports sensory processing needs in the school, is through education, advocacy, and accommodations.
Here are some examples of heavy work and movement exercises.
