How can I practice social language over the summer??

Language happens at the breakfast table, at the park, on the phone with grandma, in the car, or playing with siblings! Here's a list of things you can do to encourage social language growth.

• Read lots of books and encourage your child to retell the stories. Ask lots of questions that go beyond "What happened?". See if they can "read between the lines"

• Play a board game. Have your child explain the rules to the game. You can target sequencing (e.g., "First,..., Next...., Last..."). Practice being a good "sport"

• Have conversations in the car - ask open ended questions such as "how, why" and try to get your child to expand what they're talking about.

• Write a story or comic strip. Encourage full sentences and different sentence types.
