Language happens at the breakfast table, at the park, on the phone with grandma, in the car, or playing with siblings! Here's a list of things you can do to encourage social language growth.
Read lots of books and encourage your child to retell the stories. Ask lots of questions that go beyond "What happened?". See if they can "read between the lines"
Play a board game. Have your child explain the rules to the game. You can target sequencing (e.g., "First,..., Next...., Last..."). Practice being a good "sport"
Have conversations in the car - ask open ended questions such as "how, why" and try to get your child to expand what they're talking about.
Write a story or comic strip. Encourage full sentences and different sentence types.Â
