1. Brief description and aims of module:
The UK passed legislation to outlaw racial discrimination over 50 years ago, and yet there continues to be ethnic differences in social outcomes and experiences. This module explores ethnicity and its relevance in society. We will consider why ethnicity can become an important element of social identity, socio-political action and cultural representation. We will look at ethnic differences in outcomes in areas like health, crime and education. We will consider how to conceptualise population difference, and what counts as racism. We will also go on a fieldtrip to a local mosque, and talk about the nature and extent of ‘Islamophobia’. Previous guest speakers on this module have included people working in local government and people working for a hate crime support group. This module will help prepare you for advanced postgraduate studies and/or graduate work that require you to engage with and respond to issues relating to ethnic diversity and racism.
2. Outline syllabus:
The curriculum will be drawn from topics which may include:
Key concepts: race, ethnicity, nation, racism
Sociological debates that connect ethnicity to issues such as social identity, representation, belonging and the politics of recognition
The importance of ethnicity to outcomes and experiences in areas such as crime, health and education
3. Teaching and learning activities:
Teaching and learning is centred upon core readings (introduced on Minerva with a small number of key questions). The module will be delivered through a combination of lectures (and guest lectures), discussion of the reading, and workshop exercises to encourage deep learning (organised debates, use of AV material). The course includes a fieldtrip to a local mosque.
