1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module provides a space for collaborative portfolio practice, and explores the interdisciplinary nature of photography. You will refine both your art direction and styling skills, and explore a variety of contexts and audiences. Commissions and collaborative projects are designed to enhance key skills. A written evaluation of your practice is required to support your practical submission. You will engage with collaborative workshop activities with a range of practitioners across disciplines such as; artists, designers, editors, stylists and curators. Live projects are shared and demand a high level of professionalism, organisation and good communication skills.
The module aims to:
● Define and consolidate professional context of your practice
● Develop confidence to work with professional external practitioners and or organisations
● Work independently and in collaboration with others
● Demonstrate effective organisation and project management skills
● Demonstrate independence in decision making
● Refine and apply the technical and craft skills appropriate to professional
expectations and requirements
● Produce work which reflects your interests and abilities and is
appropriate in level and scope for employment or postgraduate opportunities
2.Outline syllabus:
Research based activities and seminar discussions with industry specialists develop your critical and historical knowledge base. This will result in a practical project and workshop outcomes that will produce a portfolio of work suitable for practice in professional life.
Typically, projects might range from: participating in an external project, working within a community, working on an editorial internal or external brief, working with a school or organization, organising or curating a public exhibition of work (as an individual or group), producing a publication.
3.Teaching and learning activities:
This module is delivered through seminars, workshops and tutorials led by academic staff and industry practitioners. Live briefs are introduced through guest seminars and presentations on campus and on location. Students work in consultation with their assigned tutor to nominate and develop their project proposal while workshops, seminars and peer critique assist you to develop your concept and practical outcomes. Research tasks are delivered in session time and assist you to critically evaluate your practice and develop effective strategies for creating imaginative photographic outcomes. By emphasising the importance of your practical research skills you will develop your ability to contextualise your photographic work, and to record and communicate your ideas effectively through a reflective journal or blog.
