1. Brief description and aims of module:
Portfolio practice within the third year involves the development of a practical body of work that helps to introduce you to a range of diverse audiences. This module focuses on the portfolio development of the photographer through the exploration of professional contexts. You will work on professional orientated briefs and develop and extend a range of practice and skills that reflects your interests, abilities and future direction as a photographer. Your photographic brief may be provided from external sources; these will be carefully selected by staff and negotiated on an individual basis. Alternatively, you may develop your own proposal with a clear consideration of professional context and audience. Your project will be realised using a variety of approaches and visual strategies, with support and guidance of tutors and your peer group.
The module aims to demonstrate:
● independence in identifying and defining complex visual solutions within a diverse range of photographic contexts and audiences
● Specialist photographic knowledge
● A distinctive area of photographic practice
● Critical awareness of theories relating to photographic practice
● Social and ethical considerations and the implications for the photographic industry
● Professional practice and employability within a range of
contexts
● A synthesis of technical and conceptual skills
● Your ability to present work and communicate ideas
2.Outline syllabus:
Academic staff and Industry guests will deliver seminars and workshops providing a valuable external dialogue with your individual practice.
A range of professional workshops will enable you to engage with photographic processes. These will be delivered in accordance with good practice and applied to a variety of professional scenarios and contexts.
You will develop an appropriate portfolio of professional practice through an external or self-initiated brief. This is an opportunity for you to establish your own creative voice with a clear professional ambition. This requires a self-motivated and professional approach to research, experimentation and contextualization.
2.Teaching and learning activities:
The briefs will include a range of teaching and learning opportunities. As the module progresses you will engage in the following:
● Group & Individual tutorials – discussions and feedback based on practical work-in-progress
● Digital workflow workshops – to improve image editing and print output
● Technical workshops in advanced studio and lighting practice
● Seminars and lectures – discussions and presentations on related themes
● Photographic practice and research – creative investigations and experiments, all documented in a working sketchbook
● Group Critiques – to present final work to tutors and your peers
