1. Brief description and aims of module:
The module introduces students to the theory and practice of leadership, with an emphasis on business organisations but covering leadership challenges and opportunities across a range of contexts. Students learn different approaches to understanding and analysing leadership, including both popular training approaches and more cross-disciplinary perspectives, as well as practicing leadership in the classroom context and developing reflections on their own styles and experiences.
The core aims are:
To introduce students to established theories of leadership, with an emphasis on business
To equip students with a range of strategies for exercising leadership in organisations
To give students experience of trying to lead a team
To enable students to reflect on what is involved in successful team leadership
To establish foundations for developing personal leadership capabilities into the future
This modules aims to develop the following graduate attributes:
Able to understand and manage complexity, diversity and change;
Critical thinkers: able to express their ideas in written and oral form, and possessing information literacy;
Ethically aware: prepared for citizenship in a local, national and global context.
2.Outline syllabus
Following an introductory session, the course comprises four components covering different approaches to understanding leadership: individual approaches (3 weeks), situational approaches (3 weeks), relational approaches (2 weeks), and cross-cultural dimensions (2 weeks). The course concludes with personal reflections on leadership.
3.Teaching and learning activities
The course is taught with a mixture of theory and practice.
There is a one-hour lecture on theory, and a two-hour practice seminar including individual and group work, including a requirement for each student to assume a leadership role in managing delivery of a group output on a set task between seminars.
