1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module develops your skills and experience as a performing musician by situating your practice in a variety of specific contexts. The module will critically examine contextual issues that may include, for example, the derivation of a successful programme, defining your artistic agenda, as well as planning to cater for specific audience types and groups.
This module aims to:
Develop your skills as a performing musician
Contextualise your practical work with supporting critical frameworks
2. Outline syllabus:
Sessions introduce you discursively to existent models and contexts from the music industry and allow space to position yourself and your work in relation to these in practice. The contexts considered may include discussion of the constituent elements of a balanced and successful concert programme; how to communicate a particular artistic agenda or performance interest to an audience; and how to design particular programmes and approaches for specific audience contexts (for example, performing in schools, nursing homes, worship/church, prisons, etc.). You complete two projects, the first designed to demonstrate these ideas in relation to a selected brief, and the second designed to allow you to creatively showcase the wider contextual issues you have addressed in constructing your response.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
Classes are composed of group lectures, practical workshops and discussions that allow exploration and discussion of the artistic issues on which the course focuses. Classes provide space for discussion-of and experimentation-with these ideas, whilst instrumental lessons provide you with a space to activate the particulars of these skills within the context of your own instrument/voice.
