1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module develops your skills and techniques as a creative musician by exploring ways in which your music-making may be applied to specific contexts, such as those within education and/or community music-making. Each project provides you with an opportunity to develop and apply your creative skills and understanding to contexts that you are likely to encounter in any music-related career path.
The module aims to:
Extend your experience of creative musicianship
Develop your understanding of the contexts in which you can create music
Widen your knowledge of potential career routes in music
2. Outline syllabus:
You develop the contextual application of your creative practice by applying your ideas to specific musical contexts related to education and the wider community, completing two creative projects, selected from a range of available choices. Such projects might include: arranging for education or community ensembles; music for teaching purposes (such as an instrumental tutor book or a pedagogic composition for a school group); or new creative work that engages with local communities, such as a piece for local musicians or a socially-engaged collaboration.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
Each project begins with a series of seminars designed to support your understanding of the contexts in which you will be asked to work. The seminars present relevant existing work; consider the practical challenges relevant to the topic and explore the skills needed to address them. Individual and/or group tutorials support you. You work on your project with tutor and peer support, as well as working with external educational and community participants as necessary.
