1. Brief description and aims of module:
Facts and stats sit at the heart of every journalistic story, but sometimes the stats themselves are the story or are the key to unlocking a hidden truth. In this module, students will explore how to uncover the human story behind the daily bombardment of data. Whether it be the latest ambulance waiting times or the number of refugees crossing a border, being able to interpret the figures can take us to a deeper understanding of what is really going on in the world around us.
Data journalism is one of the most crucial skills for a journalist to harness in the current media landscape. This module will explore how to gather and evaluate a wealth of data to create original pieces of journalism. The module will also look at a variety of engaging and cutting-edge ways to present and communicate the stories behind the statistics.
