1. Brief description and aims of module: 

This module is an opportunity for you to develop your detail design and making skills in depth.

You will be asked to take an element of a recent project (in consultation with tutors) and develop it in detail with a mock-up / simulation at full size. You will be given the opportunity to explore alternative material choices and a range of desired finishes and develop drawings to describe and analyse your proposal. The practical work is intended to develop your skills in making and your understanding of the tactile qualities of materials.

2.Outline syllabus:

You will be asked to engage in a mix of self-initiated and directed work. You will be asked to define an individual approach to your design work requiring an increased level of refinement, exploration and iteration that deals with large scale detail.

You will be encouraged to visit real buildings to explore the physical and tactile properties sought. This will give you the opportunity to further develop your observation, recording and documenting skills in compiling a reference document to expand your range of references. It will also give you the opportunity to develop your individual visual, technical and contextual research and its documentation.

3.Teaching and learning activities:

Alongside self-directed studio work these will usually include:

• Staff presentations

• Group and individual tutorials and critical reviews

• Study trips and / or gallery visits

• Personal presentation, display and documentation of work

• Active participation in taught sessions and directed learning
