1. Brief description and aims of module:
This is the final module of the course and is an opportunity to extend and deepen your interests in a specific area of design and to further define your own individual practice. In consultation with staff and the student group you will be responsible for devising the detailed brief.
The module culminates in a resolved design proposal which will be exhibited for a public audience. This project will be a key element in your graduating design portfolio, demonstrating your knowledge, creativity, skills and abilities.
2.Outline syllabus:
The module starts with survey work and brief writing and reflecting on how the two are interconnected. Survey work will include critical research into the existing building that forms the backdrop for the project. This will cover its history and previous uses and reflection on appropriate reuse. It will also cover analysis and understanding of its physical structural and construction capabilities for adaptation and alteration.
Brief writing will develop alongside the survey work to discover an appropriate programme for the building and particular issues – environmental, socioeconomic, political - that will be explored in your design project. Brief writing and Survey work may involve elements of team working / group working.
Individually you will then follow a sustained period of intensive development to test the ideas developed in the brief and an iterative approach to developing proposals.
You are encouraged to consider your standpoint on ethical, social and sustainable perspectives on design.
The body of work presented at the end of the module should be resolved and executed to a professional standard.
