1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module aims to set out both the key concepts in forensic mental health as well as the way the discipline operates in the broader context of the criminal justice system. The module will explore the types of mental health problems commonly seen within forensic settings, and will discuss topical issues within the area. You will learn about forensic mental health, care provision, treatment and rehabilitation. This module will help you to develop critical thinking skills and the ability to communicate to different audiences.

Mental health within the criminal justice system
Punishment or treatment?
Risk assessments and case formulations
Schizophrenia
Personality disorder
Intellectual disabilities
Aggression and violence in secure settings
Sexual offending and mental health
Arson and mental health
The role of the forensic psychologist in mental health settings
3. Teaching and learning activities:
Teaching and learning methods will include lectures, tutor and student-led seminars, and individual tutorials.
Lectures will introduce the core topics for the module. These will be supported with seminars which will allow for an in-depth exploration of topics discussed in the lecture.
