1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module sits within existing debates about the role of sustainable development in education and the role of education for sustainable development. In this module you will have the opportunity to study these debates, including the purpose of education for a sustainable future. You will study the UN and other international goals and how these impact schooling and education more broadly.

Themes: 1. policy 2. educational themes 3. challenges 4. your role.
Different understandings of the concept of education for sustainabledevelopment and how these link to social justice.
Exploration of dominant themes within education for sustainable development including but not limited to gender, human rights, peace education, creativity education, sustainable development and environmental education, global citizenship education.
Exploration of power relationships - policy, ideology and economic contexts
Ways of thinking
Educational approaches in primary, secondary and higher education including areas of success and challenge
Reflection on your values and future possible activism

What is the purpose of education?
What influences the outplaying of this purpose in education and schooling?
What is ESD?
What themes and ideas are seen as important?
What are the barriers to their implementation and what is working well?

What is your role in this area and what values drive you?
