1. Brief description and aims of module:
This Level 6 module will examine social and educational inclusion from a number of perspectives. It will look at frameworks which can be used to critically study the idea of inclusion. This means concentrating on social justice and human rights including a universal right to basic education which is a birthright for every human being. This also means examining issues of equity more broadly including gender, ethnicity and disability, and how social class can intersect with other factors to foreground inclusion as a complex, multi-dimensional, contested concept. Issues concerning inequality, vulnerability, risk and resilience will be considered. The module will investigate experiences of those at risk of exclusion and look at possibilities to support social and educational well-being through inclusive practices. The definitions of social and educational inclusion will be investigated by using examples from policy and practice in education. This will be in relation to challenges facing many people within certain communities, as well as those who are on the margins of society e.g. refugee children, cared for children and gypsy/ traveller children and their families.
