1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module explores contemporary theoretical perspectives and issues in educational psychology, and their application to specific areas relevant to education and learning.
This module aims to explore current, and often challenging, issues in education, helping students to develop critical awareness and judgement with regard to the complex tasks and decisions that educational psychologists face in applied situations.
2. Outline syllabus:
The module will consider contemporary perspectives and issues across a range of applied areas.
Topics may include:
Curriculum design and development of learning resources
Measuring learning and assessment outcomes
Considering psychological and learning theory in relation to education policy.
Learning disabilities and special education needs (SEN)
Learning in alternative environments and at-risk populations (e.g., youth offenders)
Further and higher education (adult learners)
Mental health in schools
Education and social justice
The role of technology in learning
Behavioural interventions for learning and classroom management
Student participation in building learning environments
Other applications of psychological theory to education contexts.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
This module comprises lectures and seminars to a total three hours of contact time each week.
Lectures will introduce core topics and provide a framework for the module. Seminars will be used to extend or explore these topics in depth, with a range of activities such as small-group work and discussions, presentations, practicals, and activities directly related to the assessments.
