1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module provides you with the opportunity to work on a substantial dance performance project with professional artists. The intention is for you to develop and refine your skills in dance performance and to accustom yourself to the demands and protocols of a professional working environment. You will have an opportunity to develop your understanding of how your skillset and interests will enable you to adapt to operate in different employment market. This is designed to assist you in your transition from the university to a number of careers in the dance industry (e.g. performer, choreographer, teacher, community practitioner).
2. Outline syllabus:
Developing your skills as a dance performer is central to the learning of this module. You will be expected to experiment and manipulate sophisticated movement material and performance content under the direction of the professional artists. You will also work alongside other company members to research, develop and present a new creative work for your selected audience.
During this module you are expected to follow the practical routine and studio etiquette of a professional company member through participation in company class, rehearsals and meetings, workshops and performances. In addition, in the first part of the module you will choose an additional role within the company which you will undertake throughout the entirety of the module demonstrating the key skills required in an employment context (rehearsal director, choreographer, marketing officer, educational outreach worker). You will be encouraged to align your choices here to support your future career aspirations. Reflecting on how your developing skillset is preparing you for employment will be an important area you can explore in the end of module viva.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
You will attend regular practical sessions that will allow you an opportunity to contribute towards the development of the project. You will also be expected to work independently outside of these times in order to fulfil the role that you have been allocated. The dance studio, the University Theatre and the virtual environment of Minerva Ultra form the basis of the teaching and rehearsing spaces for this module. Bath Spa Productions – the University’s promotional arm – is responsible for providing a professional experience in terms of budgeting, marketing and production. Tutorial support will be offered for monitoring your progress across all areas of the module. This will be key in helping you to prepare for the end of module viva.
