1. Brief description and aims of module:
Your Independent Project requires you to design, conduct and present a substantial project. Working from an initial idea or concept, the module provides you with an opportunity to explore a topic area of your choosing through a process of investigation and interrogation, and to manifest a final piece of work (written or practical/written) that extends the body of skill and knowledge accumulated over the three years of study. You may choose from a variety of approaches that could be located in practice, theory or both.
You can opt to work on an individual project or, for practical projects, as a group (maximum 4) with clearly defined and negotiated roles. You will design your project to ensure that it requires an appropriate level of investigation and interrogation that will result in a substantial piece of work.
The module requires you to be able to work with a high degree of independence and to utilise and refine your individual skillset. If you opt to make live performance work you will be able to collaborate with students from the Theatre, Festival and Events course to support the production elements of the work created.
2. Outline syllabus:
Research, investigation, interrogation and critical reflection are some of the key elements of this strand of the module. The first phase will introduce you to the relevant research and planning skills needed for the module. Once you have selected your topic area you will develop an Independent Project Proposal which will be presented to your supervising tutor for approval. Your proposal should articulate clearly how you intend to process your learning and manage this over the duration of the module. Once your proposal has been agreed you can proceed to phase 2 of the module.
In phase 2 you will be expected to self-manage your activities to ensure your project can reach its conclusion. You will be supported by tutorials and on-going communication with your tutors and peers. You will collect, analyse and present your findings in a form that is appropriate for your chosen area of investigation.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
This module will be delivered through lectures, tutorials and self-directed study sessions. In line with the FHEQ level 6 descriptor, the main focus is on independent learning, Formative assessments are delivered through regular project review meetings with your tutor that serve as important check-up points. There is also group lecture delivery around research and planning, and regular on-going critique of work in progress that involves both self and peer evaluation. The use of virtual environments such as Minerva Ultra and online documentation methods will be encouraged. The summative assessment is the final negotiated project submission.
