1. Brief description and aims of module:
The Innovation Lab modules are a forum for the co-creation of computing products (e.g. applications, experiences, tools or services) that have potential commercial or sociocultural impact. Products developed in the Lab must engage a given theme, yet their overall form and function is flexible. Innovation Lab at large is a staging area that aims to prepare you for professional working within fields related closely to computing. To this end, the programme adopts development strategies used in industry, while offering an extended opportunity to refine the transferable skills you need be effective in the world of work.
Innovation Lab II requires you to work with your team to finalise and package your product for public release. This includes evaluating prototypes with a target user group and responding to the results, as well as identifying a suitable platform for product dissemination. A second, yet critical component of the module concerns communication with your target audience. Here you gain practical experience of generating materials for the purposes of promotion, and (where applicable) user instruction and engagement. These materials support a showcase event, which the cohort plan and host with support from the academic team.
2. Outline syllabus:
Planning for public release
Evaluating dissemination platforms
Pitching to specialists
Product evaluation and insight generation
Ethical approval for user testing
Developing promotional materials
Planning and delivering a showcase event
3. Teaching and learning activities:
Class Hours
Innovation Lab modules adopt a studio approach, with academic team members on hand to support and effective facilitate team working. Some weeks are however more demanding than others in terms of team effort. You need to plan your time carefully to ensure that you can contribute to the project effectively, particularly during Sprint activities and in the lead-up to the showcase event.
Independent Learning
It is critical that you maintain regular engagement with your project team for the duration of Innovation Lab II. Care should be taken to ensure that your team are aligned towards common goals, and that each member is clear on their responsibilities and expected contributions.
