1. Brief description and aims of module:
The Devised Project modules are an opportunity to develop a substantial piece of individual work that acts as a ‘capstone’ for your graduate portfolio. You undertake a practice-led exploration of a topic in computing that should both interest you and have the capacity to showcase the knowledge and skills that you have gained as a student of BSc (Hons) Computing. The project may take a number of forms, including (but not limited to) a commercially focused product, a coherent collection of experiments, or a software solution to a problem within the field of computing. Topic selection, and academic direction more widely, is supported by a project supervisor.
Devised Project I concerns the formulation and scoping of a project topic. You begin by identifying and pitching a number of topic options, before committing to a single track and securing a project supervisor. Time is then allocated to establishing context in the form of a contextual report, and working towards the development of a prototype (or an equivalent). Progress on the developmental aspects of your devised project, including the insights you gain during the scoping process, should be evidenced using appropriate methods of documentation.
2. Outline syllabus:
The qualities of a compelling devised project
How to manage long term individual projects
Preparing for the ‘Topics Pitch’
Supervisor allocation
Conducting and writing a contextual report
Specifying a prototype
Identifying methods of evidencing progress and recording insights
Scheduling for Devised Project II
3. Teaching and learning activities:
Class Hours
You are allocated 4 hours of individual mentorship with your project supervisor. These meetings assist you in shaping the trajectory of your ideas and developing a clear conceptual framework for your project. Monthly seminar sessions offer support on managing extended projects, and provide opportunities to present your work in progress and gain critical feedback from peers.
Independent Learning
Progress across Devised Project I is managed independently. You hold responsibility for managing your efforts, identifying appropriate sources of knowledge, and scheduling review sessions with your project supervisor.
