1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module builds on your personal development planning in levels 4 and 5, and engages you in the identification, evaluation and planning of industry-focused employment, tailored to your creative strengths and abilities.
This module aims to:
Facilitate an effective understanding of current professional and industry specific requirements for employment.
Enhance self-awareness and promotion of your unique creative strengths and abilities for future employment and/or postgraduate study.
Advance preparation for industry-level employment.
2.Outline syllabus:
The module involves research and mapping of future career paths in live and mediated (film, TV, radio) performance as a comedic practitioner. It involves compiling an online, industry standard ‘live’ presence (research, CV, headshot, interview technique, industry correspondence, self-taping, evaluation and career plan, etc.) in preparation for a range of employment opportunities.
Lectures consider all aspects of working as a freelance professional comedy practitioner (UK tax system, basic account keeping and invoicing clients, Equity and online resources) and enable you to acquire the knowledge to understand the current employment market and to develop the communication skills that will optimise your creative and professional engagement with future employers. The module culminates in an industry-specific careers day, where you will have the possibility to discuss your future options with industry professionals (actors, directors, artistic directors, producers, agents and graduates).
3.Teaching and learning activities:
Most of the learning is self-directed, with some guidance from tutors and industry professionals. You will be expected to develop networking skills and the responsibility of planning your career independently. Through a series of lectures, seminars, audition scenarios and independent research, evaluation and action planning, you will deepen your understanding and professional preparation for the business of acting. A consideration of postgraduate study in areas such as Stand Up Comedy, Creative Producing, Directing, Comedy Acting, Film Acting, Musical Theatre and Contemporary Theatre Practice, will also offer an academic trajectory.
