1.Brief description and aims of module:
This module explores the landscape of contemporary audiovisual performance. Forged from the legacy of 90s VJ culture and live electronic music performance, AV performance sees electronic artists and musicians moving away from laptop performance to something more interactive and immersive, tightly integrating sound and vision.
The module aims to enable you to:
Develop AV performances, installations/gallery-based projects or explore emerging areas of practice such as virtual or augmented reality.
Explore collaborative practice by working with other performers/artists (working in, for example, music, visual media, theatre or dance) where appropriate.
Develop sophisticated technical skills in audiovisual software and hardware, programming and/or interface design.
2.Outline syllabus:
You will engage with the following areas:
• Audiovisual performance
• Installation work
• Immersive environments
• Physical interactivity (sensors, computer vision etc.)
Additionally, you may incorporate the following according to specific project ideas:
• Programming environments such as Max, PD or Processing
• Projector mapping
• Virtual reality
• Hardware hacking
• Physical Computing
• Analogue technologies
3.Teaching and learning activities
The programme will be delivered through a Weekly Lab session, supported by online study materials to work through online. This will be supplemented by self-directed study and development.
