1.Brief description and aims of module:
This module examines the media and creative industries in terms of working practices; funding and entrepreneurial business opportunities; national and regional industry contexts and generating and developing ideas.
Throughout the module you will reflect on industry developments and practices through guest speaker sessions and your own research. These reflections will be linked with your own professional practice. You will gain experience of identifying relevant areas of inquiry and conducting research into them, of presenting your ideas and being able to showcase your employability attributes.
2.Outline syllabus:
On this module, every week the following themes are regularly discussed in detail as a group and in conjunction with invited guest speakers from industry:
The pros and cons of going freelance versus working in-house for a company as a creative
Expectations versus realities of working in creative media industries.
Clearly understanding career pathways in creative media practice
The Art of Start Up for creative media companies
Successful professional branding and networking techniques
3.Teaching and learning activities:
Contact time will be based around the following:
Workshops:
– identifying and analysing contemporary developments, opportunities and challenges related to the media and creative industries
Presentations:
– presenting and communicating your ideas and research and giving and receiving peer feedback
Guest speaker sessions:
– topics include surviving as a freelancer; business start ups; the creative process and developing ideas
Tutorials:
– group assessment preparation clinics and one-to-one support on assessment items
