1. Brief description and aims of module:
You will develop an understanding of global challenges facing the world and explore the implications of these for contemporary business practices. You will engage in debate concerning the relationship between business and issues such as: climate change; the environment; humankind’s relationship to nature; inequality; social problems; and the challenge of sustainability in capitalist economies that privilege economic growth.
This modules aims to develop the following graduate attributes:
Able to understand and manage complexity, diversity and change;
Critical thinkers: able to express their ideas in written and oral form, and possessing information literacy;
Ethically aware: prepared for citizenship in a local, national and global context.
2.Outline syllabus
Extensive background reading will provide a basis for discussion and debate in class, informed by visiting speakers, the views of the module tutors, and you as a student. We will explore the state of the world through the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals, encompassing social, environmental and economic concerns of contemporary society. We will trace the history of business’s relationship with sustainability and responsibility and examine future directions for business practice, which will enable the development of solutions to sustainability challenges and of a fairer and just global society.
3.Teaching and learning activities
You will have a one hour lecture and a two hours seminar. Teaching activities will vary depending on the content, but a typical seminar session will include an introduction to the activities, time to undertake the learning activities and a short break. In addition, you will have the opportunity to give and receive feedback, complete tasks to check your progress and engage in other activities designed to support your assessment and learning. Each week, the tutor will outline the format that the session will take. Some preparatory work is required before each class.
