1.Brief description and aims of module
This module provides an introduction to the theory and practice of TESOL and relates this to your ongoing observations and experience of English language classes while on placement. The placement will run throughout the trimester and will include observation and may offer teaching practice. This module begins your reflective learning experience and development.
2.Outline syllabus
The module looks at English Language Teaching (ELT) from a very practical perspective. Topics covered include the teaching of the four skills; the teaching of grammar; pronunciation and vocabulary teaching; focus on the learner; the role of the teacher; classroom management; lesson planning; working with course materials; testing and evaluation and an overview of ELT methodologies.
ELT methodology discussions will be led by student presentations and will happen throughout the module; these will be linked to the rest of the module content both during the presentations and in the ensuing discussions.
3.Teaching and learning activities
Teaching and learning methods utilised include seminars, workshops, directed classroom-based activities and peer teaching.
