1. Brief description and aims of module:
Applied psychologists who work in clinical practice seek to ameliorate distress and improve the well-being and quality of life of their clients through the application of knowledge derived from psychological theory and research. This module provides students with an introduction to applied psychology using the conceptual framework of the scientist-practitioner model. It aims to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the issues inherent in undertaking research in ‘real world’ settings, and the core skills expected of applied psychologists who work in clinical settings, specifically: communication; teaching; establishing and maintaining a working alliance; assessment; formulation; intervention; and evaluation.
2. Outline syllabus and teaching & learning activities:
Teaching and learning methods will include a mix of tutor and student-led seminars; workshops; individual and group tutorials. The following topics will be considered:
• the scientist-practitioner model and reflective practice model as frameworks
for the practice of applied psychology
• ethical, practical and governance issues in practitioner research
• case study research
• psychometric assessment
• systematic literature reviews and meta-analyses
• qualitative psychological research
• client-centred communication and the working alliance
• teaching in clinical practice
• assessment & psychological formulation
• applied behaviour analysis
• goal setting
• clinical judgement & evidence-informed practice
• evaluation of practice
