1.Brief description and aims of module:
This module occupies the territory that might be filled by a more traditional composition module. In keeping with this composition-based premise, the module centres around the construction and organisation of sound, often into complex and hierarchical structures.
This module aims to:
2.Outline syllabus
In a traditional compositional model, the content of this module, would foreground temporal structures. This module recognises that within a Sound Arts or Compositional context such structures might be primarily spatial. It acknowledges that tensions may exist (and be creatively explored) between the temporal and the spatial, and that further complexities might be added by the incorporation of chance, choice or interactivity. It therefore offers a compositional model that can be applied across the full range of artistic activity covered by the Sound Arts pathway and MA Composition.
A weekly workshop/seminar examines a selection of Sound (Arts) (in the broadest sense) ideas and techniques, with a focus on composition from a temporal and spatial perspective, both from a historical standpoint and in terms of current practice. In tandem with this practical enquiry, you listen to and analyse a selection of works from the Sound (Arts) ‘repertoire,’ with specific reference to these techniques and with a view as to how they might inform your practice.
