1.Brief description and aims of module:
Central to this module are the research issues that surround performance and the furthering of the skill-set that is needed to best communicate those issues. This module aims to:
Further the performance skills developed in Performance 1
Foster knowledge and understanding of musical performance as research in any area of interest related to the student's own practice.
2.Outline syllabus:
You develop a research-centred performance project developing expertise in a significant area and present a conference paper/lecture-recital demonstrating the development of performance skills and practice as relating to the research topic.
The expectation is that you will integrate the findings of the research into the performance. So that might be playing within a particular musical style, exploring historic performance practices, or recreating a performance. These are examples only, and part of the challenge of the module is for you to find a means of integrating research and performance.
3.Teaching and learning activities:
Weekly lecture/workshops support presentational skills, address issues of performance and performance practice, as well as including practical workshops where students present solo and group work.
Weekly performance workshops and seminars support your development as a performer and your presentational skills. You undertake regular one-to-one lessons with a specialist teacher. You receive tutorials supporting your research project.
Seminars and workshops address the practical issues of preparing and delivering a conference paper/lecture-recital as well as supporting the student's technical and interpretational development and individual lessons will continue from Performance 1 to provide expert tuition on the student's instrument or voice and for conductors. Tutorials support the specific research topic.
This outcome of this research-focused module is the presentation of a lecture-recital. This might reflect issues such as historical or contemporary performance practice, organology, compositional or notational strategies, extended techniques etc.
The musical performance forms approximately 10 minutes of the 45-minute lecture recital. The approximate 10 minutes of music includes recorded examples (if any are used) and should not form part of the approximately 35 minutes of spoken presentation. Theoretical understanding is developed in conjunction with practical, experiential learning. You submit all supplementary material, together with a copy of the presentation as a script (which includes a bibliography if not provided as a handout) and a print-out of the presentation slides to the tutor, immediately following the presentation.
