1.Brief description and aims of module:
The aim of this module is to address the practical issues of preparing and delivering a professional standard musical performance. It is for instrumentalists, vocalists and conductors.
The module aims to:
Provide a professionally focussed performance environment
Foster an aptitude to deploy technical skill to define artistic interpretation
Examine the dynamics of performance
2.Outline syllabus:
This module provides you with a practical training for performance, informed by a critical appreciation of the technical demands of the performance process.
Individual lessons provide expert tuition on your instrument or voice and for conductors. They also enable you to focus on a Jazz or Classical genre, through your teacher and choice of repertoire.
Workshops address a range of technical, interpretational and presentational issues. Lectures cover related topics including performance practice, aesthetics, authenticity, contemporary performance, the psychology of performance and performance preparation, analysis for performers and skills of promotion and presentation.
This practical and contextual exploration of performance then informs your recital at the end of the module. The portfolio that accompanies this also engages you with the professional literature you would provide to support your recital, from CVs to programme notes and any other material required.
3.Teaching and learning activities:
Weekly lecture/workshops address issues of performance and performance practice, as well as including practical workshops where students present solo and group work. You also study repertoire, recorded performances, score analysis as related to performance.
You undertake regular one-to-one lessons with a specialist teacher and are expected to perform regularly in ensembles and concerts arranged by the Department of Music both on campus and off campus.
