2.Outline syllabus
The module focuses on developing your individual voice as a composer and an understanding of current compositional contexts. You produce a portfolio of compositions, that you build up over the module. Some of these are responses to a brief: for example, writing for a fixed ensemble.
You explore issues in new music, including techniques, aesthetics and repertoire and you work on your own compositions. You then apply these ideas to your expanding portfolio of work.
Discussing work by other students and presenting critiques broadens your critical framework and enables you to look at your own work and adapt it were appropriate. The module particularly emphasises a critical understanding of developments in contemporary composition and its related areas,
Alongside the core teaching, you have other opportunities to enhance your learning These include attending events organised by research centres and groups across the University. Visiting speakers deliver some of these sessions, while others are delivered by staff and other colleagues.
3.Teaching and learning activities
Weekly seminars include tutor-led presentations and group discussion, as well as discussion of your work-in-progress with the class. Visiting academics and practitioners lead some sessions.
Weekly tutorials present an opportunity to get focused feedback on your work throughout the module and you receive direct input into the pieces you are writing, supported by the weekly seminars which look at work by others.
Research centre/group seminars are available to attend during the module to offer additional context for your work.
For some composition projects, you rehearse your work with musicians prior to performance.
