1.Brief description and aims of module
A studio practice module, in which you produce work based upon a negotiated proposal agreed with your module tutor in your first tutorial session. This is a verbal contract and can be discussed and aligned to your development and a change of direction in your work, brought about by making, material and technical experimentations through different workshops and testing of you ideas in the studio. This is designed to re-establish and situate your practice, incorporating material and methods acquired in AF7001-30.
2.Outline syllabus
This module is designed to help you re-think and re-establish your practice, and to begin to develop a new relationship to your making and thinking in the studio environment. The accent is placed on experimentation and testing of your ideas, facilitated through regular workshops and inductions scheduled throughout the module. This is designed to help you develop appropriate technical skills and to learn new methods and processes of production. You will be required to submit a developmental work leading toward an exhibition of selected artwork at the end of the module. Alongside studio work and its documentation, you will submit an organised and edited research folder, which contains artist research and the exhibitions visited or a range of artistic projects that helped you define your ideas and develop your practice thus far. Towards the latter stages of the module you are asked to complete a 300-400 word reflective statement that needs to be included in your research folder. Through regular one to one tutorials with your tutor, group crits and sign up tutorials you will have the opportunity to discuss your ideas and the progress on the module.
3.Teaching and learning activities
Group and individual tutorials
Group critique
Self-directed research
Specialist workshops/inductions and seminars
Study visits
Visiting and staff lectures programme
We believe that continuous feedback is an essential aid to your progress on this module. Much of this will be in the form of one to one tutorials with your module tutor or other students on your module. You will meet with the module tutor on a two weekly basis and receive support and guidance to help you develop the work. You will be able to discuss your ideas and methods of making and receive constructive feedback to help you progress on the module. In addition to these, students will benefit from sign -up tutorials with other members of staff. Individual tutorials and sign up tutorials are schedule on the MA Fine Art Google calendar, giving you the opportunity to plan your tutorials in advance.
Once in a trimester a Group Critique is organised where you will be presenting your work to your peer group in your studio space, facilitated by a visiting and a module tutor. Your module tutor will provide instructions and more information about the structure of the critique in advance of the session.
A range of other support such as Visiting Lecturers, opportunities for work placements and the careers service provided by the University will support you in the development of employability-related skills.
There are several London study visits arranged by the School and a (optional) study trip abroad, for which students are charged.
