1.Brief description and aims of module
This module enables you to design and complete a comparative study based on independent research into arts, heritage or cultural management in the UK and at least in one other country. It is an opportunity to apply your knowledge of contemporary practice gained in one country to current practice in another, explore the differences and similarities between them, and consider the theoretical, ethical and practical implications of these approaches. Why are they different? Is it possible to identify particular strengths and weaknesses through a comparative approach? Are there ways of thinking and working elsewhere which could usefully be adopted by museums, heritage sites or arts venues in other countries? Is it here that the distinction between tangible and intangible cultural heritage becomes most apparent?
You will produce an extended piece of sustained work, which will allow you to demonstrate your ability to gather and analyse relevant material, marshal your evidence, and present your findings in an engaging and professional way. As with the Dissertation, this might be a good option if you are thinking of applying to study for a research degree
2.Outline syllabus
This module must include the comparison of one or more aspects of arts, heritage and / or museum practice in the UK and at least two parts of the world – this distinguishes it from the Dissertation, which can focus on a single country.
