1.Brief description and aims of module
This module reviews the evolution of policy, processes and institutions associated with the formal designation of ‘heritage’; conservation and preservation; collecting and collections management. It explores how the early evolution of the museums and heritage sector (if there is such a thing?) shaped subsequent development, together with the social, economic, political and cultural changes that shape it now.
Its focus is on the United Kingdom, but we will use international examples and the concept of ‘world heritage’ to ask broader questions about specific approaches. It consider the role of government and its understanding of ‘heritage’, and the different perspectives of each of the four home nations. It considers the role of audiences and communities as a driver for change, as well as the external pressures to which all museums and heritage organisations must respond.
This module poses two key questions: How did we get here and Where next for heritage? It complements the exploration of ideas which is central to HT7001-15 Developing Heritage Thinking.
