1.Brief description and aims of module
This module provides professional development for those teaching and supporting learning in Higher Education, be they academics, professional services staff, associate lecturers or graduate teaching assistants. The module focusses on activities of direct engagement with students, providing an introduction to ideas and practices for the design and planning of teaching, teaching method and the scholarship of learning and teaching. The purpose is to support you to both develop your practice, ground this in the evidence, and demonstrate professional requirements.
The module is structured around the gathering of feedback and evidence of practice, reflection and evaluation of this, and actions put into practice, as a reflective cycle. The aim is to develop you into a critically reflective, evidence based practitioner who can adapt and develop their teaching and enhance the learning and support for students in higher education.
The module is aligned with Descriptor 1 of the UK Professional Standards Framework, accredited with the Higher Education Academy to enable you to be awarded Associate Fellowship of the HEA (AFHEA) status on successful completion. The module also aims to go beyond this descriptor to a wider range of areas of activity, to also provide a broader introduction to the role of a teacher in higher education, and an induction into institutional systems, policies and support as relevant to the module’s focus. The module is also designed to help support the development of skills necessary for an Academic Professional Apprentice and is aligned with part of the apprenticeship standard.
