1. Brief description and aims of module
To compete in the global film business low budget practitioners must understand the historical development of business systems, procedures and models that influence the contemporary global film business. This module will also include contemporary analysis of the film funding policies and structures of European nations as well as distribution strategies and mechanisms. Students will at the end of this module be able to navigate the different systems for both low budget, commercial and cultural film production so that they are able to understand and adapt to the future demands and needs of the industry.
2. Outline syllabus
Topics covered in workshops may include:
• The rise and dominance of the Hollywood model.
• UK and European attempts to challenge Hollywood’s dominance.
• The independent funding models in UK and USA.
• Understanding contemporary UK Film Policy 2000 – present and how to apply for funding.
• The importance of genre, stars, audience segmentation & targeting.
• International funding schemes e.g. BFI, Creative Europe funding.
• Understanding traditional distribution.
• The Film Value chain: understanding the traditional commercial life of a film – Cinema, Pay TV, TV etc.
• New film value models, distribution models and finance for low budget film e.g crowd sourcing through Kickstarter etc.
• Techniques for audience engagement through social media.
• Micro budget funding landscape Microwave, iFeatures, Film 4.0
• Case Study of a new approach A Field in England
