1. Brief description and aims of module
This module explores how inclusion is exercised in education settings and how you can become an agent of change at work by acquiring a deeper understanding of the barriers to inclusion. Taught sessions provide an understanding of the ways in which vulnerability and learners’ additional needs impact on the climate of the classroom and the culture of a school or educational setting. Theories about the medical and social models of inclusion are explored and different types of exclusions are considered- eg because of race, gender and disability. You will have the choice to either write a literature based review of inclusive education or investigate the extent to which a theoretical model or a policy helps to explain the current situation in school or another educational organization with which you are familiar.
2. Outline syllabus
The module looks at inclusive education from a variety of perspectives. Theories and practice of inclusion are highlighted using different settings as examples of how the educational experience of vulnerable students may be improved. The dilemmas facing educationalists (Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCO)/ head teachers/teachers) and researchers seeking social justice for all students in a changing educational landscape is discussed with a view to improving practice. Intersectionality is discussed by considering ethnicity, gender and social class as some of the factors which impact inclusive education.
You will be encouraged to take part in discussions and lead on presentations that are linked to the module content during seminars.
3. Teaching and learning activities
Teaching and learning methods utilised include seminars, workshops, discussions and student presentations.
